UK to Portugal: Schengen Rules, Travel Time & Entry Requirements (2026)

By Entorii Team | Last updated: March 12th, 2026

Portugal is one of the UK's favourite destinations, from the Algarve's golden beaches to Lisbon's vibrant culture and Porto's port wine cellars. Every day in Portugal counts toward your 90-day Schengen allowance.

Since Brexit, UK travellers must track their Schengen days carefully. A week in the Algarve followed by a city break in Lisbon — plus any other European trips — all draws from the same 90-day pool.

Entry Requirements

UK citizens can visit Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Passport must be valid for at least three months beyond departure and issued within the last ten years. ETIAS will be required from late 2026 (€7, valid 3 years).

Schengen Impact

Portugal is a full Schengen member. Madeira and the Azores are also part of Portugal and the Schengen zone. All days count toward your 90-day limit. If you've visited Spain or France recently, those days reduce your Portugal allowance.

Popular Multi-Country Combinations

Portugal + Spain (14–21 days)

Both Schengen. Easy train and bus connections between Lisbon and Seville or Porto and Vigo.

Portugal + Morocco (10–14 days)

Morocco is non-Schengen. Only your Portugal days count toward the 90-day limit.

Portugal + Madeira/Azores (10–14 days)

All Portuguese territory — all Schengen. Days combine.

Travel Tips

Faro airport is the gateway to the Algarve and has budget flights from across the UK. Lisbon and Porto are well connected year-round. Portugal uses the Euro and is one of the more affordable Western European destinations. The Algarve is busiest in July–August; spring and early autumn offer warm weather with lower prices. Portuguese food is excellent — try pastéis de nata, fresh seafood, and local wines.
