UK passport validity explained before travel in Europe

For Europe, UK passport validity for Schengen travel requires a passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and expiring at least three months after departure.

Those two dates are checked against different points in the itinerary. A passport with a reassuring expiry date can still be too old for entry, particularly where extra months were added when it was renewed.

1. Check a UK passport’s validity before European travel

For entry to the Schengen area, GOV.UK gives UK passport holders two document tests. The passport’s date of issue must be less than 10 years before the day of arrival. Its date of expiry must be at least three months after the day the traveller plans to leave the Schengen area.

Use the first border crossing into Schengen for the issue-date test, then use the final exit from Schengen for the expiry-date test. On a journey from London to Paris, then Barcelona, with a flight home from Spain, the relevant dates are arrival in France and departure from Spain.

Document validity is separate from the permitted length of stay. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before travel count towards the 90-day allowance, so check the Schengen 90/180 rule in 2026 alongside the passport dates.

Without a valid travel document, or with a passport reported lost or stolen, entry can be denied. For wording that applies to Spain, consult GOV.UK’s Spain entry requirements before travel.

2. Read the dates on the passport photo page

Open the passport’s photo page and locate the fields headed “Date of issue” and “Date of expiry”. Then write down the first day in Schengen and the day the whole Schengen trip ends. It helps to place the four dates in this order: issue date, arrival date, departure date, expiry date.

For the first test, count 10 calendar years from the printed issue date. Arrival must fall before that anniversary. A passport issued on 20 June 2017 is still less than 10 years old for arrival on 15 June 2027. Arrival on 20 June 2027 reaches the 10-year point, so it does not meet the stated condition.

For the second test, count three calendar months forward from planned departure. If departure is 30 June 2027, the passport needs to expire on 30 September 2027 or later. The expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the issue date. The two conditions stand independently.

3. Apply the two date rules to your trip

The table below applies the UK passport rules for travel in Europe to three complete itineraries. It is designed to be read as a quick decision check, though travellers should still confirm current requirements before booking.

Passport and Schengen tripIssue date checked on arrivalExpiry date checked on departureResult
Issued 20 June 2017; arrive 15 June 2027; leave 30 June 2027; expires 30 September 20279 years and 360 days old, so less than 10 yearsExpires exactly three calendar months after departureMeets both date rules
Issued 1 August 2017; arrive 2 August 2027; leave 12 August 2027; expires 2 December 202710 years and 1 day oldMore than three months after departureFails the issue-date rule
Issued 5 January 2021; arrive 10 May 2027; leave 20 May 2027; expires 19 August 2027Less than 10 years oldOne day short of 20 August 2027Fails the expiry-date rule

Use complete dates, including the day and month. A changed outbound flight can alter the issue-date calculation; a later return can alter the expiry-date calculation. Re-run both checks after any itinerary amendment.

4. How does passport validity work for Spain?

Spain follows the Schengen issue-date and expiry-date requirements. France follows them too. A trip that enters France, continues through Spain and exits from Barcelona therefore needs one arrival date for the first test and one final Schengen departure date for the second.

Take an itinerary arriving in Paris on 5 July 2027 and leaving Barcelona on 22 July 2027. The passport must have been issued after 5 July 2017, and it must expire on or after 22 October 2027. Leaving France on 12 July does not make 12 July the relevant departure date if the traveller remains in Spain until 22 July.

Check the current country guidance on GOV.UK’s France entry requirements. Once the passport dates work, use a free Schengen calculator to test proposed dates against previous stays in the rolling 180-day period.

5. Do a passport validity check before booking and check-in

Do the calculation before paying for non-refundable travel, then repeat it when the itinerary is final. At airline check-in, the passport and booking are already tied to a specific route and return date, which makes a late discovery harder to resolve. GOV.UK says to check with the travel provider that the passport meets the requirements.

Contact the provider well before check-in where a date is close to either threshold, where the journey has changed, or where the passport carries an unusual period of validity. Keep the booking confirmation available when asking, because the first Schengen arrival and final departure are the dates that matter.

A booking confirmation does not change the document rules. Treat the provider check as a chance to resolve an uncertain date, rather than an alternative to reading the passport itself.

6. Watch for extra months on passports renewed before 1 October 2018

A UK passport renewed before 1 October 2018 might show extra months of validity. Its printed expiry date can consequently fall more than 10 years after the printed issue date. This is why looking at expiry alone can give the wrong answer for Schengen entry.

For example, consider a passport issued on 12 September 2017 and expiring on 12 March 2028. For arrival on 1 October 2027, it is more than 10 years old. The March 2028 expiry date leaves more than three months after an October holiday, yet the passport still fails the issue-date condition.

Passports issued in 2017 and 2018 deserve particular attention for 2027 and 2028 trips. Compare what is printed on the document with the itinerary day by day, rather than estimating from the year of issue.

7. Check Cyprus and Ireland separately, then renew in time

For Cyprus and Ireland, check the GOV.UK page for each destination before travel.

If either Schengen date is close to the limit, organise a renewal early enough to travel with the replacement passport. Once it arrives, repeat both calculations using its newly printed issue and expiry dates, and update passport information held by the travel provider where required.

Add this task to a step-by-step Europe trip plan. A replacement passport may solve a document-date problem, while earlier Schengen stays can still affect the available days for the trip.

Final check before departure

Read four dates together: the passport issue date, passport expiry date, first Schengen arrival and final Schengen departure. The practical answer should be straightforward: arrival is before the 10-year anniversary and expiry is at least three months after departure. Where either calculation is close, check the latest official guidance and ask the travel provider before travelling.

Frequently asked questions

What are the UK passport validity rules for the Schengen area?

A UK passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and must expire at least three months after planned departure from the Schengen area. The issue date is checked against arrival, while the expiry date is checked against departure.

Does passport validity for Spain follow the same rules as France?

Yes, Spain and France follow the Schengen passport issue-date and expiry-date requirements. Check the current GOV.UK entry requirements for the country before travelling, especially if a date is close to a limit.

How do I check a passport’s validity for a Schengen trip?

Compare the issue date with the first Schengen arrival date, then compare the expiry date with the final Schengen departure date. Arrival must be before the 10-year anniversary, and expiry must be at least three calendar months after departure.

What happens when a UK passport was renewed before 1 October 2018?

It may have extra months added to its printed validity, so the expiry date can appear much later than expected. It can still fail the Schengen requirement when its issue date is more than 10 years before arrival.

What should UK travellers check for Cyprus and Ireland passport requirements?

Check the GOV.UK page for each destination before travel. Cyprus and Ireland set their own passport rules.
