ETIAS for Non-EU Travellers: What Changes When It Launches in 2026

By Entorii Team | March 15th, 2026

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is expected to launch in late 2026. It will require visa-exempt travellers (including UK, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens) to register online and pay a €7 fee before entering the Schengen zone. Think of it as Europe's equivalent of the US ESTA or the UK ETA.

The most important thing to understand: ETIAS does not change the 90/180-day rule. You still get 90 days maximum. ETIAS just adds a registration step before you travel.

Track Your Schengen Days

ETIAS or not, the 90/180-day limit still applies. Entorii tracks your days automatically and warns you before you hit the limit. Free on iOS and Android.

What Is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic pre-travel authorisation system. Before boarding a flight or crossing a border into the Schengen zone, visa-exempt nationals will need an approved ETIAS linked to their passport. The system will screen applicants against security databases before they arrive, similar to how the US ESTA and Canada's ETA work.

Who Needs ETIAS?

ETIAS applies to citizens of roughly 60 visa-exempt countries, including:

  • United Kingdom (since Brexit)
  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • Brazil
  • United Arab Emirates

If you currently need a Schengen visa (e.g., citizens of India, Nigeria, or China), ETIAS does not apply to you. You will continue to use the regular visa process.

ETIAS vs. a Visa: What's the Difference?

ETIAS is not a visa. Key differences:

  • Application: ETIAS is online only, takes minutes. A Schengen visa requires an embassy appointment, biometrics, supporting documents, and weeks of processing
  • Cost: €7 for ETIAS vs. €80+ for a Schengen visa
  • Duration: ETIAS is valid for 3 years, covers multiple trips. A Schengen visa is typically issued for a specific trip or limited period
  • Stay limit: Both are subject to the same 90/180-day rule

How to Apply for ETIAS

  1. Go to the official ETIAS website (once launched) or download the official app
  2. Fill in personal details: name, date of birth, passport information, email address
  3. Answer security questions: travel history, criminal record, health
  4. Pay the €7 fee by credit or debit card
  5. Receive your authorisation — usually within minutes by email. Your ETIAS is linked electronically to your passport number; there is nothing to print

Apply before you book your flights. Airlines and border authorities will check your ETIAS status before boarding.

Which Countries Require ETIAS?

ETIAS will be required for entry into all 29 Schengen countries, plus Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus. These are the countries covered:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

Countries That Do NOT Require ETIAS

ETIAS does not apply to non-Schengen European countries outside the EU framework. Each has its own entry rules:

  • Turkey — its own e-Visa system
  • Montenegro — visa-free for most nationalities
  • Serbia — visa-free for most nationalities
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina — visa-free for most nationalities
  • Albania — visa-free for most nationalities
  • United Kingdom — its own ETA system (separate from ETIAS)
  • Ireland — not part of ETIAS (has its own immigration policy)

What ETIAS Does NOT Change

This is worth repeating:

  • The 90/180-day rule stays the same. ETIAS does not give you more days. You still get 90 days in any rolling 180-day period
  • ETIAS does not guarantee entry. Border officers still make the final decision at the point of entry
  • ETIAS does not replace a visa. If your nationality requires a Schengen visa, you still need one
  • Your passport still needs 3+ months validity. ETIAS doesn't change passport requirements

Whether or not ETIAS has launched, tracking your 90/180 days remains essential. Use the free Schengen calculator to check your remaining days before any trip.

Similar Systems Around the World

If you've travelled to the US, Canada, Australia, or the UK recently, you've likely used a similar system already:

  • US ESTA — $21, valid 2 years
  • Canada ETA — CAD $7, valid 5 years
  • Australia ETA — AUD $20, valid 1 year
  • UK ETA — £10, valid 2 years

ETIAS follows the same concept: a quick, cheap online registration that strengthens border security without requiring a full visa process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals visiting Schengen countries. You apply online, pay €7, and receive authorisation (usually within minutes) that is valid for 3 years.

When does ETIAS launch?

ETIAS is expected to launch in late 2026. It has been delayed multiple times — originally planned for 2024, then 2025. There will be a transition period where ETIAS is optional before becoming mandatory.

Does ETIAS change the 90-day limit?

No. ETIAS does not change the Schengen 90/180-day rule. You are still limited to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. ETIAS only adds a pre-registration step.

Do UK citizens need ETIAS?

Yes. Since Brexit, UK citizens are third-country nationals and will need ETIAS authorisation to enter the Schengen zone once the system launches.

Do I need ETIAS for non-Schengen countries like Turkey or Montenegro?

No. ETIAS only applies to Schengen zone countries (plus Bulgaria, Romania, and Cyprus). Non-Schengen countries like Turkey, Montenegro, Serbia, and Albania have their own separate entry requirements.
